Seeking Graduate Students for Research Assistantships

Dr. H. Michael Gach, Adjunct Associate Professor of Health Physics (UNLV), and Director of Research Imaging Facility at the Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI), seeks two graduate student research assistants beginning Fall 2007 and beyond.  The research assistants will assist in the automated analysis of neuroimaging data acquired from Phase II of the Icelandic Heart Association (IHA) Ages, Genes/Environment, and Susceptibility (AGES) study.  Phase II is scheduled to commence in early 2007 although funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be requested to commence in Fall 2007.  Results from the study may be applied as partial fulfillment for the requirements of a Ph.D. or M.S. degree.  However, UNLV Ph.D. candidates are preferred to support this 5-year study.  Candidates should have strong computer programming skills and participate in graduate programs in either Health Physics (e.g., Medical Imaging), Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Biostatistics and Epidemiology, or other related field/department.

The research assistants will develop and apply software tools for analyzing structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data.  The study will examine perfusion (i.e., tissue blood flow) changes related to aging and neurocognitive degeneration, acquired from hundreds of Icelandic research volunteers.  The research assistants will apply statistical parametric mapping (SPM) and biostatistical analysis techniques to examine the risk factors for cerebrovascular disease and dementia.   The candidates should have experience and strong skills in Matlab and C programming, and Linux/Unix and Windows environments.

The research will be conducted at the beautiful Summerlin campus of the Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI) located 12 miles due west of UNLV’s main campus, so the candidates should have access to transportation.  Interested candidates should contact Dr. H. Michael Gach at mgach@nvcancer.org (resumes are requested) or (702) 822-5382.
